Brandon: How to Save a Life

Feb 22, 2021

A Road to Nowhere

In 2019, Brandon suffered from a rare injury to the chest. It made something as simple as sleeping painful. The injury and its effects were so severe that Brandon was unable to work.

"I hopped from hospital to hospital, doctor to doctor, and multiple telehealth conferences," said Brandon. "But my injury couldn't be diagnosed locally, leading me nowhere."

Trying to Move Forward

Fast forward to 2021, two years after the initial injury. This whole time, Brandon had been searching for someone who could help him. In January 2021, he found out about a surgeon who had developed a revolutionary suturing method. The surgeon's team could also diagnose the effects of Brandon's injury. Brandon said, "This gave me hope to bring my life back."

There was just one problem. Brandon lives in Michigan, and the surgeon was in West Virginia. The trip was more than 270 miles one way. "I can't travel alone," said Brandon. Aside from needing a travel companion, Brandon couldn't pay for a flight. How could he access the diagnosis and surgery?

On Wings of Hope

Right when Brandon's hope was running out, angels interceded on his behalf - Mercy Medical Angels' volunteer pilot program, to be exact! "I reached out to Melissa at Mercy Medical Angels," said Brandon, "and she got me in contact with a volunteer pilot named Charlie." Brandon was able to bring one of his friends, so he wouldn't have to fly alone.

When he was asked about his experience flying with a volunteer pilot, Brandon's voice lights up with joy and gratitude. "Charlie is a great pilot and a great guy! He made my friend and I laugh, and we all enjoyed the flight." Brandon added that Charlie has been flying for many years, but doesn't take the amazing view for granted: "Even after all those years of flying, he's still struck by the beauty of creation."

Best of all, Brandon didn't have to pay a cent for the travel assistance. He was able to get answers about his injury, and the surgery was scheduled to occur shortly after.

"They Are Saving My Life!"

Now, Brandon is doing much better. His quality of life is improving. He is able to maintain physical and mental wellness. Brandon will need help in the near future, so he can fly to receive the surgery. But he doesn't have to worry about the challenges of travel. Mercy Medical Angels' volunteer pilot program will be with him all the way.

"Mercy Medical Angels stepped in," said Brandon, "and they really took care of me. I wouldn't be able to see this surgeon if it weren't for them - they are saving my life!"
