So Many Struggles

“I was first diagnosed in May of 2002 with chronic, gradually worsening pain.”

So begins Jennifer’s story. Fast forward 20 years, and her list of conditions has grown almost exponentially. The chronic pain was due to muscular dystrophy, in combination with fibromyalgia and neuropathy. Jennifer doesn’t get a rest from these challenges, not even in sleep. She also deals with sleep apnea and chronic fatigue syndrome.

On top of this, she is in great financial need. She receives disability payments, but that’s quickly reduced by rent and medical bills. “This doesn’t include all my other expenses,” said Jennifer.

Hope and Healing... 440 Miles Away

"I need to travel every 28 days for treatment,” said Jennifer, “from my home in Roanoke to Northern Virginia.” These frequent trips allow her to attend a pain management program and receive the medications she needs.

However, driving to treatment and back spans 440 miles and 8 hours. Two of her friends take turns driving her, one of whom needs to rent his car. The gas costs about $240, which puts a further strain on Jennifer’s limited resources.

Jennifer needed to receive the pain management program and prescriptions to live the best life she could. But travel was simply getting too expensive. How would Jennifer access the care she needed?

Charitable Ground Transportation Saves the Day

That was when Jennifer found out about Mercy Medical Angels. Mercy Medical Angels provided charitable ground transportation by sending her free gas cards. Now, she could pay for the travel, and get to her critical medical treatments.

“The gas cards I received were extremely beneficial,” said Jennifer. “I wouldn’t be able to receive the care I needed if Mercy Medical Angels didn’t provide transportation assistance.”

“Thanks To All of You!”

Jennifer’s quality of life has increased since receiving the charitable ground transportation. It helped her to maintain financial stability. With the stressors out of the way, she can focus on taking care of herself and her treatment.

When asked how Mercy Medical Angels helped her, Jennifer’s emotions take over. She has a hard time finding words, but eventually settles on expressing gratitude.

“Thank you all - thanks to all of you!”
