Chronic Pain Patient Goes the Distance

September 9, 2021

Triple Threats

Diane lives in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Since she has no family nearby, her two small dogs provide much needed comfort. However, Diane also needs urgent medical care on a regular basis. She has Stage 4 melanoma and multiple sclerosis. On top of this, she developed problems with chronic pain.

“I live in constant pain,” said Diane, “and my body does not absorb pain medications, not even the strongest ones.” She adds that the chronic pain has plagued her for five years, and that no doctor has been able to figure it out.

“I’ve been everywhere,” she said, “with no diagnosis yet.”

Another Chance?

“I needed to go to another hospital,” said Diane, “because the other facilities have run out of options.” She found out that a vascular specialist may be able to help her. The specialist was located at a hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

There was just one problem. Diane would have to drive 225 miles to get to Gainesville, then the same distance back. The most efficient route included the Florida Turnpike, which is a toll road. Gas and tolls, especially for a round trip of 450 miles, would be prohibitively expensive.

How would Diane get another chance at health?

Hope Arrives

That was when Diane found out about Mercy Medical Angels’ charitable ground transportation program. They sent her gas cards so she would be able to pay for the costs of long-distance travel.

“This is the second time I’ve ever taken the Florida Turnpike,” said Diane. “It is a very nice road, and I was fortunate enough to have your help with the gas expenses and the over-costly tolls.”

“I Am So Thankful...”

Diane’s gratitude spills over when she talks about how Mercy Medical Angels helped her. She especially thanks the ground transportation coordinator, Melissa Brian, for sending the gas cards and taking good care of her. “Melissa is amazing,” said Diane.

When Diane continues, her words overflow with the kind of joy that only comes from restored hope. “I am so thankful for all you do. You are earthly angels.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
