Teen Finds Help for Rare Disease, Thanks to Volunteer Pilots

Struggles with Systemic Arthritis

Andrew lives in Oklahoma with his family. His young age would cause most to think he doesn’t have too many health struggles – but the truth is the exact opposite.

He has a rare autoimmune disease called systemic arthritis. In other words, Andrew’s immune system attacks his joints. This causes mobility problems and pain. However, the symptoms don’t stop there. Systemic arthritis can also cause fevers, rashes, and swollen glands.

Best Chance is a Slim Chance

Andrew saw multiple doctors in his home state, trying to find treatment. But none of them could help him. “There is no one in our state who specializes in this,” said Andrew’s parents. This meant they would have to travel to another state for care.

Their best chance of helping Andrew live a healthier life was seeing a specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio. But they were strapped for resources. “His medical expenses average $10,000 per year,” said Andrew’s parents. Adding a round-trip flight to that would push them into deep debt.

The best chance was suddenly a slim chance. How would Andrew access the treatment he needed?

Volunteer Pilots Save the Day

Some believe that when the situation looks truly desperate, angels fly in to save the day. In this case, the angels were volunteer pilots from Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic! Coordinating with volunteer pilots from Angel Flight South Central, they ensured that Andrew could go to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for treatment.

“Every single pilot we interacted with was a blessing,” said Andrew’s parents. “They were patient with us, explaining each leg of the journey and even what the dials up front do.

“We were a little anxious in the small planes at first, but each pilot helped us feel safe.”

“We Are So Thankful...”

When asked how the volunteer pilots helped them, Andrew’s parents’ answer brims over with relief and gratitude.

“We knew traveling to Cincinnati was the best option for our son, but the high cost added stress. We are so thankful to Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic and Angel Flight South Central for providing this service, and making it one less thing to worry about.”

“We are so thankful for the time you dedicate to provide this service. It really does make a difference!”
