Driving Hope Forward on and off the Green
Under clear Virginia skies and surrounded by a community committed to making a difference, Mercy Medical Angels proudly continued a meaningful tradition at the 8th annual Catholic Cup Golf Tournament. Held at Cypress Point Country Club in Virginia Beach, the event brought together supporters, partners and advocates with one shared purpose: strengthening access and awareness for children’s mental health across Hampton Roads.
Among those representing Mercy Medical Angels were President and CEO RADM Gib Godwin, USN, dedicated supporter Isaiah O. and Chairman of the Board COL. JV Venable, USAF (Ret.), joined by his wife, Lil. Together, they stepped onto the course not just as players, but as champions for a cause that aligns deeply with the organization’s mission of ensuring access to transportation to medical care.
A Tradition Rooted in Community Impact
As a long-standing Platinum Sponsor of the Catholic Cup, Mercy Medical Angels has remained committed to supporting initiatives that uplift families and children in need. This year’s tournament, headlined by Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia and the James Barry Robinson Institute’s Next Step to Success program, highlighted the growing importance of accessible mental health resources for young people.
The Catholic Cup is more than a day of golf—it’s a reflection of what can happen when community organizations come together with purpose. By uniting leaders, donors and advocates, the event continues to shine a light on critical issues while fostering a spirit of generosity and connection throughout Hampton Roads.
Taking the Course for a Cause Close to Home
For Mercy Medical Angels, supporting children’s mental health is a natural extension of its mission. Many of the patients served by the organization face not only physical health challenges, but emotional and psychological ones as well. Access to transportation to medical care plays a vital role in ensuring that children and families can reach the services they need, when they need them.
Events like the Catholic Cup help bridge awareness and action. By participating, Mercy Medical Angels reinforces its commitment to addressing barriers to care—whether that means a ride to a medical appointment or standing alongside partners who are advancing mental health support for children.
Every swing taken on the course carried a deeper meaning: a step toward stronger, healthier futures for young people in the community.
A Day of Friendly Competition and Shared Purpose
While the mission remained front and center, the day also offered moments of celebration and camaraderie. Mercy Medical Angels’ foursome brought both enthusiasm and teamwork to the tournament—and their efforts paid off with an impressive 2nd flight win.
Laughter echoed across the fairways, conversations sparked new connections and a sense of shared purpose united everyone in attendance. It was a reminder that giving back can be both impactful and joyful.
From the first tee to the final putt, participants experienced the power of community in action—coming together not just to compete, but to contribute to something far greater.
Stronger Together in Hampton Roads
The success of the Catholic Cup Golf Tournament reflects the strength of partnerships across the region. Organizations like Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia and the James Barry Robinson Institute continue to lead the way in supporting children’s mental health, and Mercy Medical Angels is honored to stand alongside them.
By investing time, resources and energy into events like this, Mercy Medical Angels helps extend its reach beyond transportation to medical care—supporting the broader ecosystem of care that families rely on every day.
“A good time was had by all while giving back to Hampton Roads.”
As the day came to a close, one thing was clear: when communities come together with heart and purpose, meaningful change follows.
