Sixteen Years of Wings: How Zeq Found a Way to Heal

At two years old, Ezequiel “Zeq” was barely clinging to the weight of a toddler. At just 19 pounds, his small body told a story no parent should have to read. His arms were raw from relentless rashes. He scratched until they bled. His energy faded. And despite visit after visit, answers remained out of reach. What Zeq and his mom Kristine needed most was not only a diagnosis but a way to get to it. That is where Mercy Medical Angels entered their lives, beginning a journey that has lasted more than 16 years.

When Something Was Clearly Wrong

Kristine knew something was not right. Doctors initially brushed off Zeq’s symptoms as food allergies, but the severity did not match the explanations. The rashes, the weight loss, the constant discomfort all pointed to something more serious. Trusting her instincts, Kristine sought another opinion and took Zeq from their Virginia home to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

That decision changed everything.

At Johns Hopkins, specialists diagnosed Zeq with a rare autoimmune condition called eosinophilic esophagitis, or EoE. His immune system was attacking food, causing severe inflammation and triggering the rashes and other symptoms that had taken over his young life. By the time of diagnosis, Zeq was severely malnourished and required a feeding tube to survive.

The treatment plan offered hope, but it came with a daunting reality: ongoing, specialized care far from home.

Miles Between Home and Hope

Regular travel from Virginia to Baltimore quickly became overwhelming. Physically, the trips were exhausting for a child already fighting for strength. Financially, they were unsustainable. Gas, lodging and time away from work piled up, turning each appointment into a heavy burden.

Kristine searched for help and found Mercy Medical Angels online. What she discovered was a nonprofit dedicated to providing free transportation to medical care for patients who could not afford to travel. For families like Zeq’s, distance should never decide outcomes.

Through Mercy Medical Angels’ commercial transportation program, Kristine finally saw a path forward with Mercy Medical Angel’s partnership with Southwest Airlines to fly Zeq to his appointments, dramatically reducing travel time and stress. What once felt impossible became manageable. What once felt isolating became a partnership built on compassion and trust.

Healing That Took Flight

With consistent access to expert care, Zeq began to heal. The feeding tube that once sustained him became unnecessary. His body responded to treatment. He grew stronger, more active and more confident with every passing year.

Food was no longer the enemy it once had been. Today, Zeq can eat almost anything, a milestone that once felt unimaginable. The child who struggled to gain weight now runs, plays and lives with the energy of a kid who knows what it means to fight and win.

Recently, Mercy Medical Angels partnered with Southwest Airlines again to provide commercial flights, expanding options and reliability for Zeq’s ongoing treatment.

These partnerships matter. They mean fewer missed appointments. They mean less stress for families already carrying so much. And they mean children like Zeq can focus on being kids, not patients.
