Rising Complications and Rare Conditions

Brent discovered he had GPA from a minor injury. “He tried to treat it himself,” said Lisa, “but it only got worse.” They went to see the local doctor, who diagnosed Brent with GPA. There were no specialists in the area that could help Brent.

GPA, also known as Wegener’s Disease, is a rare condition – fewer than 200,000 cases per year in the United States. It causes inflammation of the blood vessels. The inflammation causes blood vessels to weaken. Weakened blood vessels can narrow and cut off blood supply to vital organs. They can also stretch until they break, leading to internal bleeding.



Saving Grace

Brent’s only hope was at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. There was just one problem. Driving to the clinic was a journey of almost 300 miles, and that was just one way. Brent and his family didn’t have the resources to pay for long-distance travel. “We were in a rush for medical care,” said Lisa.

Luckily, Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program gave a saving grace. They provided gas cards, so Lisa could drive Brent to Mayo Clinic.

“We like to keep our feet on the ground,” said Lisa, “so the five-hour drive is doable. We can stay at a hotel and take the shuttle to Mayo Clinic.”



The Story's Not Over

Brent must return to Mayo Clinic, to monitor the effects of GPA. Mercy Medical Angels will continue to help him, sending gas cards. This seemingly small piece of assistance makes all the difference for a low-income family like Brent’s.

“Our trip was great,” said Lisa. “Brent’s health is improving. We couldn’t do it without your help.”
