Child Travels to Receive Life-Changing Neurosurgery

Needing Neurosurgery

Kierney was diagnosed with three major conditions when she was younger. The first was Chiari Malformation. The second was cranio-cervical instability, or CCI. The third was a tethered spinal cord. These three conditions caused her a great amount of pain, decreased her mobility, and damaged her nerves. The only option to make her life better was extensive neurosurgery.

“She’s had three major surgeries in three years,” said Kierney’s parents. “Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful.”

Problems Had Her Down...

Kierney’s parents went to the doctor in their hometown of Williamsburg, VA. The doctor said nothing could be done in the local area. However, there was a team of specialists in New York City that could help Kierney get better.

There was just one problem with this approach. Kierney’s parents knew that making ends meet for the family is often difficult. The current circumstances would only make it more difficult. “We do not have the financial means to take off work, care for our 2 other children and travel for Kierney's surgery,” said Kierney’s parents.

...Volunteer Pilots Lifted Her Up

In times of desperation, people often pray for angels to help them. In this case, the answer to prayers came from Mercy Medical Angels’ volunteer pilot program! Thanks to the volunteer pilots, Kierney was able to fly with her parents to New York City – for free.

“Both sets of pilots were caring, helpful and of the utmost professionalism,"” said Kierney’s parents.

The neurosurgery and recovery took ten days in total. When it was all over, Kierney and her parents flew back home.

"Easy and Stress-Free"

When asked to describe how Mercy Medical Angels’ volunteer pilot program helped Kierney, her parents have all good things to say.

“They made it easy and stress-free. Between COVID-19 concerns and an already medically complicated child, having a private pilot and flight took so much stress off our plate. Mercy Medical Angels’ volunteer pilot program made Kierney’s care possible!”
