Free Medical Flights Help Veteran to Attend Healing Retreat

Struggling with PTS and Depression

Samuel is a Veteran who lives in North Carolina. He suffers from PTS (Post Traumatic Stress) and depression. The traumatic experiences of combat made it hard for him to trust others. Adding to that pain, he felt like nobody would understand what he was going through. “I struggle with everyday life,” said Samuel.

A Chance at Healing... More than 330 Miles Away

At a particularly dark point in his life, Samuel heard about a healing retreat called Warrior Week. Warrior Week is hosted at Camp Southern Ground. It helps Veterans through a threefold approach: discover strengths, define purpose, and develop a life plan. This eases their transition from military to civilian life, as well as healing their inner wounds.

Samuel applied to Warrior Week, which was held between May 1 and May 6. The organizers responded to tell Samuel that his application had been accepted. However, a problem remained. Camp Southern Ground was in Fayetteville, Georgia - more than 330 miles away from his home in North Carolina. How would Samuel attend the healing retreat?

Mercy Medical Angels Provides Free Medical Flights

That was when Angel Wings for Veterans, a program of Mercy Medical Angels, stepped in. The nonprofit provided free medical flights for Samuel, so he could attend Warrior Week at Camp Southern Ground. While there, he found community and comfort.

“I am grateful for being a member of such a great group of people,” said Samuel. “I learned a lot from the program, and they gave me tools to use in my life.”

“Thank You For Helping Me...”

Samuel has since returned from Warrior Week at Camp Southern Ground. He is using the skills he learned at the healing retreat to improve his life. While he still struggles sometimes, he knows he can overcome them and that they won’t last forever.

“Thank you for helping me,” said Samuel, “as a combat Veteran who needed help.”

“You were there to help me in a time of need. I enjoyed my flight to the event, and just want to say thanks again for flying me out to the event. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to attend.”
