Lung Cancer Patient Finds Care, Thanks to Free Gas Cards

Lung cancer patient after finding life-saving care at University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB)

A Troublesome Timeline

In 2015, Sherri was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Doctors in her hometown tried to put it in remission for three years. They had little-to-no success. In fact, Sherri almost died from the failed attempts at treatment.

"It never behaved like a typical lung cancer case," said Sherri. Unfortunately, the cancer's troublesome timeline would continue for another six years.

A Chance at Healing

It was early in 2024 when Sherri finally found a doctor who could help. This doctor immediately referred her to University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). "He got me in to see the oncologist the very next day," said Sherri.

The oncologist said that Sherri would need to visit up to three times per month. Her hope was rising - perhaps healing was in reach after all!

From Shaky Ground...

Not too long after, Sherry realized something. This realization put her hope on shaky ground.

UAB was more than 170 miles away from her hometown, just going one way. She couldn't afford gas for such a long drive. How would Sherri receive the care she needed?

...To Stability

That was when Sherri found out about Mercy Medical Angels' ground transportation program. Mercy Medical Angels sent her free gas cards. This made it possible for Sherri to find care at UAB.

"Before receiving this assistance," said Sherri, "I would have to reschedule appointments because I couldn't afford to drive. Mercy Medical Angels has helped me maintain financial stability."

"I Owe Them My Life..."

Sherri's fight isn't over just yet. But something is different between when she was first diagnosed and now. That something is reassurance. Thanks to Mercy Medical Angels sending her free gas cards, she doesn't have to fight alone.

"Mercy Medical Angels has made this ordeal so much easier," said Sherri. "I owe them my life."

"Honestly, I just can't thank them enough!"
