Mercy Medical Angels Receives Grant Award from Disabled Veterans National Foundation

NORFOLK, VA – Mercy Medical Angels (MMA) is honored to announce it has received a capacity building grant from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) to provide free transportation to critical medical treatment to low-income Veterans and their families. 

"The support we have received from DVNF will provide significant relief for the Veterans that we serve," said RADM J.B. Godwin III, USN (Ret), President and CEO of Mercy Medical Angels. "The grant from DVNF is vital to MMA’s mission of ensuring that no Veteran is denied care due to the lack of transportation. We are grateful and honored to be selected to receive this funding. 

Joseph VanFonda (USMC Sgt. Maj. Ret.), CEO of the Disabled Veterans National Foundation said, “Mercy Medical Angels provides critical support to veterans. By connecting them with transportation to medical appointments, whether across town or across the country, MMA serves veterans by filling this unique need. We are proud to help fund this endeavor of ensuring no veteran is unable to obtain medical care simple because they needed assistance getting there.”

For 51 years, Mercy Medical Angels has been the nation’s largest provider of charitable transportation for low-income patients to reach their critical medical treatments. Mercy Medical Angels mission is to remove the barrier to medical care with transportation on the ground and in the air.  MMA helps children, cancer patients, seniors, Veterans and their families with free gas cards, bus, and train tickets, and with flights flown by Volunteer pilots and the commercial airlines.

Disabled Veterans National Foundation exists to provide critically needed support to disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded—physically or psychologically—after defending our safety and our freedom. DVNF achieves this mission by: 

  • Offering direct financial support to veteran organizations that address the unique needs of veterans, and whose missions align with that of DVNF. 
  • Providing supplemental assistance to homeless and low-income veterans through the Health & Comfort program and various empowerment resources. 
  • Providing an online resource database that allows veterans to navigate the complex process of seeking benefits that they are entitled to because of their military service, as well as additional resources they need. 
  • Serving as a thought leader on critical policy issues within the veteran community and educating the public accordingly.
