Stories from Grateful Patients: Geri

In Her Own Words...

"Hi my name is Geri, I am a Registered Nurse, and I am familiar with breast cancer. My maternal grandmother died in 1980, with breast cancer at age 56, she never knew what type it was, but never expected it would happen to me. I was diagnosed 4/11/2025, when I was 45 years old with Triple Negative Breast Cancer Stage 2B-3, by the time of treatment 5/22/25. Genetic testing showed negative, suddenly my life changed in ways I never imagined. It was overwhelming. I'm having 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy with reconstruction and 25 radiation therapy treatments. At first, I lost myself as I was going through my journey. I was angry, frustrated, upset. I am a single mother with an 8-year-old daughter that has a heart condition called WPW (Wolff Parkinson White), on top of all of this now. None of this was fitting in with how I planned my life to be."

"I had to drive 89 miles one way to my many treatments. I couldn't afford gas on top of everything else I was paying for. But Mercy Medical Angels came to my rescue, by sending me gas cards. I am so grateful for their assistance."

"When things get hard, I tell myself: The body can achieve what the mind believes, girl you already have what it takes, you can and you will because you got this. I've become such a strong and positive person throughout this. I'm a good, caring, loving person. And I am starting to love myself again, day by day. I'm starting to become stronger and stronger each day. My family has supported me through everything. My friends, my team of doctors and God have helped me, too. The journey has been exhausting and continues to be, but in the end it will be worth it. I've learned so much from having breast cancer. I'm proud to say I'm a pink sister for life."
