A Disabled Teen's Challenges

Kareem is a 14-year-old boy. He lives in Pennsylvania with his mother, Maryanne. Like many people his age, Kareem wanted to go to summer camp. However, he can’t attend most summer camps – he has multiple disabilities. Among them are autism, ADHD, and Down Syndrome.

Chasing Summer Dreams

As summer neared, Maryanne did extensive research on summer camps for children with disabilities. She found out about Victory Junction in North Carolina.

This camp would allow Kareem to chase his summer dreams. He would still receive the help he needed to stay safe and have fun. Kareem’s doctor soon wrote a recommendation letter for attending Victory Junction, and it was approved.

Roadblocks on the Path

But roadblocks soon emerged on the path. “Kareem can’t sit in the car for an eight-hour drive,” said Maryanne. Not to mention, the cost of gas would be prohibitive.

Flying would be far more efficient. But the bustling airports might cause Kareem to have meltdowns - he might even run away, trying to find refuge from the sensory onslaught. Even if he could remain regulated, it was still too expensive.

How could Kareem attend Victory Junction?

Transportation Assistance from Volunteer Pilots

Angels soon answered their prayers. But the angels weren’t the kind one would expect – they were volunteer pilots from Mercy Medical Angels!

Kareem had a lot of fun flying with the volunteer pilots. After landing from one leg of the flight, he climbed up onto the wing to get a better view of the airport. The pilot watched from the tarmac with a grin. After all, it was Kareem’s first experience of a general aviation flight!

“I loved seeing all the joy this brought my son,” said Maryanne. “And I could tell the pilots truly enjoy what they do.”

"One Happy Camper"

Kareem came back from Victory Junction with a big smile on his face. “Kareem was one happy camper,” said Maryanne. “Mercy Medical Angels gave my son the chance to enjoy Victory Junction. He returned much more verbal, and excited to share his experiences.”

Before the flight home, the pilots asked Kareem and Maryanne if they wanted to take a picture. They accepted. Kareem's mom struck an off-balance pose, put up a peace sign, and struggled to hold back a laugh. The pilots made silly faces. As for Kareem, he stood front and center with a confident grin and his arms crossed.

In that joyful moment, Kareem taught everyone two important lessons. The first lesson brings hope. No matter what challenges you may have, you can still chase and capture your dreams. The second lesson brings authenticity. Kareem's story shows everyone the best person to be is yourself.
