Difficult Path...

Shortly after going into remission, Anastasia found out about True North Treks. This organization is based in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mission of True North Treks: “Our treks aim to improve cancer survivors’ psycho-social well-being and overall way of life.” They accomplish this by a week-long wilderness experience. 

“It is a time for young adults to come together to share their stories with others who have been through similar trauma,” said Anastasia, “and it is a time for processing, bonding, and healing.” 

Anastasia was able to go on one trip with True North Treks, but it drained her savings. When her doctors recommended that she should go again, she realized it would be a difficult path to get there. “It would have been a six-hour drive,” said Anastasia, “far too much for me to handle.” Her only other option was to fly round-trip from Chicago to the Upper Peninsula. It would be a quick flight – but she couldn’t afford it. 

...Now Cleared

That was when Anastasia found out about Mercy Medical Angels. The nonprofit partnered with American Airlines to pay for a round-trip ticket. It came at no cost to Anastasia, and she was able to go on True North Treks once more.

“It was truly an amazing experience,” said Anastasia. “The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a remarkable place, full of peace and natural beauty.”

Now, Anastasia is back home and doing much better. When she talks about her experience with Mercy Medical Angels and American Airlines, her voice shakes with tears – but they’re tears of joy and gratitude.

“I’m very grateful to Mercy Medical Angels for the travel assistance,” said Anastasia. “They helped in a huge way! If it weren’t for them, it would have been a hardship to get there. Thank you!”
