Sonya and Jewel: Gifts from the Sky

February 21, 2021

Meet Sonya

Sonya is a Veteran who lives in Arizona. Her home state is known for natural wonders, ranging from sunset-painted canyons to rushing rapids. Here, geologists can find fossils from the earliest days of Earth’s history. The area is also famous for semi-precious gems such as turquoise, which the Native American legends state are pieces of the sky.

But Sonya has difficulties enjoying the outdoor beauty and rich history. When she came back from combat, she was awarded a Purple Heart. But the honor did not come without a high cost. Sonya suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress and a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Digging for Answers

Sonya’s doctor said that a service dog would improve her quality of life, and contacted Shepherds for Lost Sheep. The organization got back to Sonya in good time. “I was contacted by Shepherds for Lost Sheep,” said Sonya, “and I was finally able to get a service dog.”

There was just one problem. The service dog training facility was in Vanderpool, Texas. This was more than 770 miles away from Sonya’s home in Scottsdale, Arizona - and that was just going one way. Sonya couldn’t afford round-trip tickets for such a long distance. But she had no other options.

Sonya knew she would need multiple trips to train her service dog, Jewel. Then another trip was required to take Jewel home. Sonya started digging for answers, to no avail. She was running short of resources – and worse, her hope had almost completely run out.

Making the Connection

That was when Mercy Medical Angels' program for Veterans stepped in. The nonprofit arranged travel for Sonya – at no cost. Once at the service dog training facility, Sonya met Jewel.

Jewel is a German Shepherd – big in size and even bigger in heart. This particular dog breed has a strong protective instinct and high intelligence, so they make excellent service dogs. Sometimes, it takes a while for service dogs to connect with the humans they are meant to help. But fortune was on Sonya’s side – she and her service dog bonded almost instantly.

“Jewel and I are now connected,” said Sonya, “thanks to Mercy Medical Angels.”

A Priceless Gift

Back in Arizona, Sonya is doing much better. Jewel is helping her, providing much-needed support. Some days are still harder than others. But with Jewel, Sonya doesn’t have to face the difficult times alone.

In the past, Native Americans who lived in Arizona believed that precious stones were gifts from their deities. Turquoise was the most prized of the precious stones. It was said to come from the heavens above, an endless blue sky.

In the present, Veterans like Sonya can receive a life-changing gift as well - a service dog like Jewel. Mercy Medical Angels' program for Veterans makes this possible through travel assistance, helping Veterans train and obtain service dogs. And with that help, the lights of healing and hope are in reach for Veterans - like priceless gifts from the sky.
