Stories from Grateful Patients: Leanne

In Her Own Words...
“I was diagnosed with BRCA+ breast cancer in 2021. In July 2021, I had a bilateral mastectomy. However, I couldn’t have reconstruction immediately after. When I did, I had a terrible outcome from my surgery. The surgeon left me lopsided, and it was shaped like a square. The left reconstructed breast was much smaller than the right side.”
“The hospitals in my hometown of Springfield, Missouri only offered implants to fix it. I couldn’t have those, so I needed to go somewhere else. Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, was able to provide the care I needed. However, I couldn’t afford the cost of gas. I’m a single mom of two teen girls and we’re all living on my small disability checks.”
“Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program sent me gas cards so I could drive to the hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. They increased my quality of life, and they helped me maintain physical and mental wellness through this difficult time. I would not have been able to receive the care I needed if it weren’t for transportation assistance from Mercy Medical Angels.”
“I am so grateful for your help!”
