Cancer Patient Finds Treatment, Thanks to Charitable Gas Cards

July 20, 2022

Cancer Patient’s Challenges

David was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2012. He went straight to an oncologist for treatment. The oncologist prescribed chemo and a stem cell transplant.

The chemo weakened David’s immune system and drained his energy. But that wasn’t the only challenge he would face during treatment. After he finished chemo, he received a stem cell transplant of bone marrow. His immune system started attacking the new bone marrow, causing Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD).

Roadblock to Treatment

The oncologist didn’t have the resources to treat GVHD. He referred David to a specialist at Penn State in Hershey, PA. However, there was a roadblock to treatment. The hospital at Penn State was 85 miles away from David’s home. He and his wife are on a limited income, and they couldn’t afford gas.

David didn’t know how he would get to Penn State and receive treatment. The situation was looking bleak.

Charitable Gas Cards Save the Day

That was when Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program stepped in. Using funding from the Hogan Foundation, Mercy Medical Angels sent David charitable gas cards. Now, he could drive to Penn State for treatment – at no cost.

“We are in hopes of being cured of this disease,” said David, “and hopefully living a fulfilling life after treatments.”

He added, “My wife and I truly appreciate everything Mercy Medical Angels has done for us, especially the charitable gas cards.”

"We Truly Appreciate Everything..."

In the near future, David will need to continue driving to and from Penn State. Mercy Medical Angels and the Hogan Foundation will continue to help by sending charitable gas cards. He knows that his journey isn’t over yet. But one thing is certain: Mercy Medical Angels and the Hogan Foundation are with him all the way.

“We truly appreciate everything you have done and everything you keep doing for us,” said David.

“Thank you!”
